Smooth Zoom Transition in After Effects

A zoom transition sells energy: the frame rushes into the next shot instead of just cutting. Here is the fast version — the same rig the free project file below is built on.

What you need

Two clips you want to join, and After Effects (any recent version). No third-party plugins — this is all native effects.

The three moves

1. Pre-compose both clips. Stack clip A over clip B, trim the overlap to about 8–10 frames, and pre-compose each so you can scale them as a whole.
2. Add the zoom. On the last frames of clip A, keyframe Scale from 100% up to ~180% and add Directional Blur ramping with it. Mirror it on clip B — start zoomed-in and blurred, settle back to 100%.
3. Ease and sell it. Select all keyframes → Easy Ease (F9), then push the influence in the Graph Editor so the motion snaps. Add a whip-pan sound and you are done.

Follow along
