How the size comes down

Two things shrink the file: the long side is capped at 1080p, so 4K and 1440p footage is scaled down, and the video is re-encoded to H.264 at a sensible quality level. Phone recordings, screen captures and high-bitrate exports usually drop a lot. A clip that is already a compact 1080p H.264 will not shrink much — there is little left to remove without visible quality loss.

Trimming is the biggest lever

File size is roughly length times bitrate, so cutting the clip down does more than any quality setting. Use the timeline handles to keep only the part you need, then export — the combination of a shorter clip and a 1080p re-encode is what gets a heavy file down to something you can attach or upload.

Questions

How much smaller will my file be?

It depends on the source. 4K and high-bitrate clips often drop by more than half; a video that is already a lean 1080p H.264 may barely change. Trimming reduces size regardless of the source.

Will the quality drop?

It is re-encoded, so there is some loss, but at a high quality level. For sharing to social, chat or email the result looks the same to the eye while being far smaller.

Can I set an exact target size?

No — there is no target-size box. Your levers are trimming the length and the automatic 1080p cap. For a specific size, trim more aggressively and re-export.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

No. Encoding runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. The file never leaves your device.
