Which Instagram size to use

4:5 portrait is the tallest shape the main feed will show, so it takes the most screen space in the scroll — that is the default here. 1:1 square is the safe option when the same clip also goes to a grid preview. 9:16 fills the screen for Reels and Stories. A 16:9 landscape video posted untouched gets letterboxed into a small strip, which is the usual reason a post underperforms.

Reframing, not squashing

The video is cropped, never stretched, so faces and proportions stay correct. You drag the frame to choose what survives the crop — useful when the subject sits off-centre in the original landscape shot.

What resolution should an Instagram video be?

1080×1350 for 4:5, 1080×1080 for square and 1080×1920 for Reels. This tool caps output at 1080p on the long side, which matches all three.

Will Instagram compress it again?

Yes, Instagram always re-encodes on upload. Starting from a correctly-sized 1080p MP4 gives that pass the least work to do and the best-looking result.

Can I add text before posting?
