Clean Green Screen Keys in 3 Steps
Kill the spill and keep the hair — a no-nonsense Ultra Key workflow in Premiere Pro, plus a ready-made preset to download.
Most bad keys come from doing too much at once. Split it into three passes and even messy footage cleans up fast.
1. Key the color
Drop Ultra Key on your clip, set Key Color with the eyedropper on the green nearest your subject, and switch the view to Alpha Channel. You want the subject solid white, the background solid black — ignore the edges for now.
2. Fix the matte
Under Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup, nudge Transparency, Highlight, Shadow, then Choke and Soften. Small moves. Watch the alpha view: you are chasing grey noise out of the black and holding the white edge without eating hair.
3. Kill the spill
Back to Composite view. Use Spill Suppression to neutralise the green bounce on skin and edges, then add a subtle Color Balance to match your subject to the new background.
